Castles, chateaux and monuments

It would be a shame to lose some of the sights in the Bohemian Forest. As for castles, chateaux or church monuments, you will definitely not get lost in the Bohemian Forest. You have a lot to choose from. We can't forget the war monuments from the Second World War, a number of which are located here.

Přimda Castle

The ruins of the oldest stone castle in the Czech Republic stand at an altitude of 848 m above the town of the same name. It offers its visitors both guided tours and a self-guided tour.

Tachovsky castle

It was created in the town of the same name by the reconstruction of a Gothic castle in the 17th century. The castle was founded by the monarch on the site of an early medieval hillfort around the middle of the 13th century. It remained a royal castle throughout the Middle Ages but was often rebuilt by various monarchs. Among the important noble families that took turns in its possession are the lords of Gutštejn, the Pluhs of Rabštejn and the Lobkovics. After the Thirty Years' War, the old and heavily damaged castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style. In 1770, the castle burned down, and the Windischgrätzes had it restored in the classicist style between 1787 and 1809. The castle grounds are protected as a cultural monument.

Kladruby Monastery

The former Benedictine monastery founded 900 years ago by Prince Vladislav I. The dominant feature of the area is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was rebuilt by the famous Czech architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel in the Baroque Gothic style. The dome of the church, which rises to a height of 46 m, is topped with a gilded Marian crown. The second most important building in the monastery grounds is the New Convent building, designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.

Monument with vehicle wreckage

Many places in the Bohemian Forest remind of specific human destinies and stories of liberators from the 3rd US Army of General George S. Patton. Above the village of Díly, an American jeep ran into a planted German mine and the entire crew perished. Part of the monument is also a shed with vehicle wreckage.

Monument in Růžov

This memorial describes Operation Cowboy, a military action of the 2nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Group that took place in Bielsko and Hostouňsko. The operation led to the rescue of a herd of rare white Lipizzaner horses from the Spanish Imperial Riding School in Vienna, which the Germans had gathered at the military stud in Hostouň. This event became the template for the American film The Miraculous Rescue of the White Stallions.

Old Herstein

The ruins of the castle, which was conquered by Vilém of Rožmitál in 1510, are located in the Starý Hirštejn nature reserve. It is said that in the 17th century its ruins were a favorite place for gem seekers.

Horšovský Týn

A castle converted into a chateau in the historic center of the town of the same name in the Domažlice district. From the north and west, it is surrounded by an extensive castle park in a natural landscape style. There are castle moats on the north and east sides. The castle and castle partly stand on a rocky promontory, under the castle there is an extensive historical cellar carved in the rock. The monument is under the administration of the National Institute of Monuments and in 1995 it was entered on the list of national cultural monuments.

Monastery in Pivona

The former Augustinian monastery located in the village of Pivoň, approximately 5 km southwest of Poběžovice. The most interesting part of the monastery is without a doubt the presbytery of the one- nave church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the creation of which dates back to the middle of the 13th century.

Matt Konop plaque

There are really strong stories connected with the end of the Second World War. We can mention, for example, the story when a descendant of emigrants from Klenčí and Mrákov, Matt Konop, returned to Chodsko as one of the liberators. On the anniversary of the 1970s since the end of World War II, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in Domažlice square.

Educational trail near Újezd

The Air Tracks of World War II educational trail shows the history of the liberation of Chodsko at the end of the war. At the end of the trail is a memorial to American fighter pilot Virgil Paul Kirkham, who gave his life here on April 30, 1945. He was the last American fighter pilot to die fighting Nazi Germany in Europe.
